Why candidates should ask questions too
Congratulations, you’ve been invited for a (digital) interview. You are well prepared for all the questions you might be asked. But have you also prepared for the question, “Do you have any questions for me”? This is your chance to be the smart, pro-active and interested candidate your future employer is looking for. By asking the right questions you can demonstrate your sincere interest in the job and illustrate why you are the right match for the position. More importantly, you can ask questions that will help you determine if you want to work for this company. Live job interview offer the opportunity for dialogue so try to be pro-active. But what are good questions to ask? Here are some useful questions to get you started:
What is the natural career path for a person in this position and how ill my performance be evaluated?
With this question you demonstrate that you’re serious about the job and thinking about a long-term career at the company. You also show that you are ambitious and take your development seriously.
Could you paint a picture of what a typical working day looks like?
You are not just interested in a job, but want to learn what the job is all about and what is expected of you.
How would you describe the company’s general culture?
This question helps you with your decision about what kind of working environment you may encounter.
Why do you like working for this company?
Maybe a bit bold, but this will help you get an honest answer, since an answer with a lot of “uhhh”, “ahhh” and “well” also tells a story.
Remember that a good match happens on both sides and you should take advantage of the opportunity to inform yourself in order to make the right career decision.
